this website is a good resource for using dof on faces. it is important to have the focus point on the eyes and shallow dof is important to create a more connected face. 

this picture doesn't have shallow dof and isn't very ingaging 

this photo has a shallow dof and is alot more ingaging. it has more emotion and you feel more connected to the subject. 

i believe this is very important for my project as some of my pictures need focus on the subject 

how ever i'm interested in trying for the chained photo having the subject ie me out of focus and the symbolism in focus.
