development of digital skills- symbolism

symbolism

symbolism is the use of symbols to represtent ideas and give more than the inherinate meaning in the piece.

ie. "time is money"    "life is a roller coaster"

it's used a lot in literature and now has started to be used in visual media

an example of an object being used a symbol which is important to my project is the chain "A chain can symbolize the coming together of two things" -http://examples.yourdictionary.com/examples-of-symbolism.html
i can use this to symbolis the holding back of objects in my past on me

in photography this idea of symbolism is refered as a type of photography called conceptual photography. "As a methodology conceptual photography is a type of photography that is staged to represent an idea. The 'concept' is both preconceived and, if successful, understandable in the completed image." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conceptual_photography

there are many diffrent examples of conceptual photography

in photography the symbolism seems to be simple and also the only thing in the photo so not to distract to much. the messages are powerful and the point of focus

in film the symbolism is often only one thing but is not directly in focus. it is a back point of the piece of art to add more to the watchful viewer

but what inspires me most is painting. painting has many symbols and fills the whole piece with imagery. i want to try and emulate that in the symbolism in my piece whilst taking inspiration from the style of film and photography.
a good example is salvador dali

he pieces tell alot about who he was by using symbolism to represent his inner most thoughts
