development of digital stills- presentation

i work with to idea. one was to hold up the picture attached to the board like in the mugshot. i tried it out but i didn't like how it looked as the picture look fake and i didn't work.

i then thought what would work more was the file.

i went to buy the equipment to make it.

i like the numbers and decided to write me in binary. i also like the classified as it shows how private my inner personality is. i like the writing to tell more about the photo. i think do finger prints as it makes it really personal to me. it is my full self portrait as it has physical ink prints which are unique to me alone.

i really liked how the photo turned out and i think it really shows a interesting inlook into me as a person.

development of digital stills -editing and the final idea.

this is the first layer of my photo. this is the white background in the studio, i light it the way i wanted it. i then needed to make it wider to fit all the people in so i stretched it. it knew it needed more texture then.

and then i added bricks as a texture (which i had taken earlier) and made their opacity low and changed the levels to make them match.

then i added the floor. i had to play with the levels alot on this to make it fit and blur the lines to make it match.

i then added a layer with me on it. this had to be matched and worked together with the other layers. i got help from the technician for this.

i then cut the images out of there individual picture and put them as layers on this image. i had to work with the opasity and levels to make sure it fits. then i changed each image to represent the mood. saturation for depression, blur for the body image. strong lighting for the arrogance one. double exposure for anxiety and and opacity for invisibility

i then added the txt and lines. i had to work with the opacity to make the fit and work with txtures to make them work....i then had to add a adjustment layer to finish the project off.

develpment of digital stills - explanation of idea process

i started with the ideas of themes around self portrait for me

mental
relationships
life

i then explored these ideas and through my inspirations i came on the ideas

held back

the sand is always yellower

self punishment

i then expolred these ideas and did more research and came up with my final ideas

then i had to learn photoshop to get make my ideas work.
i when to adam the technician to help with the very complicated ideas and ethan from class for genral editing

i then when to the studio to get pictures

these are the shots i did for the the sand is always yellower. i worked with the lighting for about 200 photos till i got the perfect lighting. i really like the emotion in these photos. i also work with facial expression.

these are the photos i started with for the self punishment shot. i worked with one point lighting and darker shots but i didn't like the lighting except for the last two. i decided hard lighting worked the best. i really liked the vision though and could see this idea working.

these are the shots i did for the held back idea. i really like the poses. i worked with 3 point, 2 point, and 1 point lighting. i decided the most emotive and most visual storytelling light was the 1 point....i also worked with shoting out of focus to show my anxiety and unclearness. i liked it.

i liked all 3 ideas but from these practices i decided that the self punishment as firstly it was simple but also i thought the framing and the idea was the most powerfull. i thought this would turn out the most effective for this project. i will return to the other ideas in my own time.

i then went back later in the day to do my final pics.

these are my final pictures. i really liked them and they have so much potential. i like the light ones for the body and then i was going to add the dark shadow from the dark ones. i use different type of lighting for both types of photos. i worked on on the framing and decided that having the whole of me works better, it is more like the usual suspects framing.

now i had to go do editing.

i also like these as it real takes a deep look into humanity. i also like the use of writing. something i will use in the presentation of my piece

devolpment of digital stills- artist inspiration- martin parr, francesca woodman, duane micheals

martin parr

martin parrs photography impires my work as the style and colour of his work looks very carnival cut out style. i think it creates a fantasy style of photography in a almost to fake kinda world. i think i can use this in my cardboard cut out idea as it would work with the "fake" life i want.

Martin Parr is a chronicler of our age. In the face of the constantly growing flood of images released by the media, his photographs offer us the opportunity to see the world from his unique perspective.
At first glance, his photographs seem exaggerated or even grotesque. The motifs he chooses are strange, the colours are garish and the perspectives are unusual. Parr’s term for the overwhelming power of published images is “propaganda”. He counters this propaganda with his own chosen weapons: criticism, seduction and humour. As a result, his photographs are original and entertaining, accessible and understandable. But at the same time they show us in a penetrating way how we live, how we present ourselves to others, and what we value.

Francesca woodman

i like Francesca woodman work as she explores the idea of being hidden in her photographs. the black and white works well with this. i expecially like the use of reflection in her second photograph. i like the idea of trying to hide by being shown by a reflection of yourself. i think having a wide frame is very important for this style of photography. i might use her for inspiration for my held back idea.

Francesca Stern Woodman (April 3, 1958 – January 19, 1981) was an American photographer best known for her black and whitepictures featuring either herself or female models. Many of her photographs show young women who are nude, blurred (due to movement and long exposure times), merging with their surroundings, or whose faces are obscured. Her work continues to be the subject of much critical acclaim and attention, years after she killed herself at the age of 22, in 1981

i like the idea of using a blured subject for my image to create this hidden idea.

duane michals

i like this photo as it deals with the nature of reality and reflection as i want to use reflection in my piece. i like the idea of warping images via the mirror. showing the distruptive idea of my self.

i like this image to as it shows how power txt can be. the image itself is pretty dull with not much meaning but add the txt and it become a hole other level of powerful imagry. i use this as impsiration on how much words can add or even change a meaning. this went from happy to sad with a adding of txt so i wonder if i can use txt to change the mood to.

i like this photo as it shows her dispearing in her own enviroment. i like the fadded colours and the double expsure. makes it look out of place. i want to simulate this for anxiety as it creates a stresfull image.

development of digital stills- artist inspiration- charles latham

Charles Latham

Charles Latham
  • Created a series of photographs that showed him physically harming himself after the break up of a relationship
    • Alarmed his friends and caused debates when they were posted online
  • Latham wanted to continue investigating the issues and feelings he portrayed in the original photographs so created Cyrus
    • Cyrus’ is Latham’s imaginary friend, alter ego, personal demon and doppelganger
    • He was able to examine himself in a more controlled way
    • By adding this character Latham found a way to address aspects of his life that caused him pain or that he hadn’t come to terms with
    • Projects feelings of self-loathing on to Cyrus instead of himself
    • Creates a protective layer of acting and role-play within a safe environment so he does not hurt himself
  • Latham can be both model and photographer
  • Cyrus is Latham’s middle name that he is ashamed of and has kept secret
  • Secrecy and shame also arise in his feelings about his sexuality which he may also explore through Cyrus
  • Props such as mask and handcuffs along with the ambiguous nature of their relationship suggest something threatening and frightening

i find his work impirational as it makes staments on both the image of self and also self judgment and anxiety about one's self. i like that he has use multishots of himself and layered them in photoshop. i find the use of symbolism powerful as it adds more to the photo and reinforces the meanings present in the photo. you can also see the imprance of the mise en scene of the inter photo. ever aspect is important to charles and the meaning we get from the photo. ie white simbolisng innocence with the black being dirty. the unmade bed. the fake smart suit, the blood paiting. all of these have their own meanings.

development of digital stills- artist inspiration- mental health mugshots

i got a lot of inspiration from this source on insane asylum mugshots

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3000407/Portraits-asylum-Harrowing-19th-century-photos-patients-notorious-institution-kept-SHACKLES-visibly-distressed.html

  • Photographs were taken at West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum by chief neurologist Sir James Crichton-Browne
  • While some pictures may appear barbaric to modern eyes, they asylum actually led the way in ethical treatment
  • Each picture is accompanied by detailed medical notes and diagnoses including ‘imbecility,’ and ‘simple mania,’

  • these photos are very disturbing and are also very emotive. it shows the importance of facial expressions.  these are also very good inspirations on how to show inner brain states via a photo.

Sir Crichton-Browne also used the security of the asylum to begin his groundbreaking research into mental illness, investigating whether there was a biological cause behind the conditions he help to diagnose.
He helped to take some of these portraits of patients, meticulously labelled with notes on the patient’s appearance and ailments, and three years later collaborated with Charles Darwin on his book ‘The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals.’
Crichton-Browne pioneered a medical approach to the treatment of mental disorders at West Riding, banning the use of restraints unless necessary, keeping sedation to a minimum, and allowing patients to indulge in leisure activities and take up jobs as part of their healing process.
He also published in-depth journals from his time at West Riding containing observations from himself and his team on mental illness, treatments with various drugs known to affect brain function such as cannabis, nicotine, alcohol, and nitrous oxide.

Others case files show patients were suffering from general health problems such as symptoms which would be recognised today as post-natal depression.

these photos where use to diagnose people with mental illness. i want to work with the idea that i can show myself through a photo.
