devolpment of digital stills - alternative idea

this is my alternative idea. it was based on the idea of what is identity. stemming from our new found cyber dependence and how all our lives are displayed online. it adds a element of fragility the fact that my history is out for all to see. this is shown though my faded transparent portrait shot.

development of digital stills - backup idea (internet history)

i like the idea of having internet history as my self portrait. illustrating how much of our lives are viral and how much we give out. leaving our digital legacy for all to see.

i was thinking you could have the internet history double exposed over a shot of me.

i might end up doing this for my final project as it requires less photoshop which is becoming a real issue for me.

these are the kinda picture i would double expose over. i could even have the internet history as the backgrounds.

i feel like i could use this as a back up idea if the other idea has come into fruition.

the more i think about it the more universal meaning this idea has for my audience. i do like my other ideas but it is very personal so maybe wouldn't create so much thought in the viewer. with this idea i feel like it could create alot more thought in the viewer.

development of digital stills- preliminary practice photos

from these pictures i have found that strong harsh flash looks the best. also that the lighting needs to illustrate the emotion on the face perfectly.
i also think using the shadows in the background can be very usefull. even to tell more about the subject.

also for the background the white bricks looks really emotive and powerfull. i will have to try and superimpose the bricks onto the white backgorund of the studio.

i also think there should be more of the subject in the picture and have in a usual suspects police line up style. i will have to use 3 point lighting and also take pictures seperatly using the same constant lighting.

dance video development

dance video

general ideas

  • establishing shots at start
  • start with close up coming into focus and end with whole establishing shot going out of focus
  • go from intermit to far away
  • dutch angles
  • (transition of relationships)
  • leave dancers and catch up later ??
  • use juxtaposition. relating ideas together
  • close up shots
  • same frame moving in and out
  • changing shutter speed in fast motion
  • establishing zoom shot then dancers appear
  • close up on body parts
  • use of space- increase the space through the filming.

inspiration

saving private ryan is a good example of how to use shutter speed to create a dynamic yet fluid action scene. i think we can use this in our dance shot to get motion blur for some of the more dynamic scenes and the cut it together with faster shutter speed. we may have to use two cameras set at different shutter speeds.

mad max fury road is useful for our dance video due to is incredibly cinematography in an action film. it has big dynamic shots mixed perfectly with intermit shots which i want to emulate in our piece. it also uses the rules of cinematography perfectly which we will need to stick to to have our piece make coherent sense. it also shows the importance of framing a shot in movement cinema. the frame has to be perfect as the movement is so quick.

the video for sia's big girls cry is very interesting. it sticks to the same close up for the entire video. i want to use a lot of close ups for my video. i also like how the dancer leaves the whole frame and then enters again, something id like to work with. i also like the idea of the coming into focus at the start and coming out of focus.

i also like the video for elastic heart as it shows how dancing can be use to create meaning and a story in a situation. i.e. the relationship between a father and daughter and their fight with depression. i also like their use of establishing shots to set the mood and tacking shots. i also like the idea of the dancers coming from far away to close to the camera.

i like this video as well firstly for it's establishing shots which i take massive inspiration from but also it's use of tracking and panning. it shows how you don't need to always have the subject in shot. it adds a huge amount of motion and strength for the dancer to leave the shot (plus catching up with them later is really interesting) this video also shows the importance of light to bring out all the motion of the shot.

this is a run down of all our shots. we have a mixture of wide and intimate shots. we take inspiration from all these other videos and feel like these shots will fit we the dance and create enough to make a meaningful video in post.

development of digital stills - identity psychology

 identity psychology

for this project it focuses predominately on the idea of self and ideas of identity as it is a self portrait. there have been many psyclogists who have made theorys on the ideas of self and I believe looking into some of these theorys can give ammunition to my work.

Collective identity[edit]

Main article: Collective identity
Many people gain a sense of positive self-esteem from their identity groups, which furthers a sense of community and belonging. Another issue that researchers have attempted to address is the question of why people engage in discrimination, i.e., why they tend to favor those they consider a part of their "in-group" over those considered to be outsiders. Both questions have been given extensive attention by researchers working in the social identity tradition. For example, in work relating to social identity theory it has been shown that merely crafting cognitive distinction between in- and out-groups can lead to subtle effects on people's evaluations of others (Cote & Levine 2002).[2]
Different social situations also compel people to attach themselves to different self-identities which may cause some to feel marginalized, thus traveling between different groups and self-identifications. These different selves lead to constructed images dichotomized between what people want to be (the ideal self) and how others see them (the limited self). Educational background and Occupational status and roles significantly influence identity formation in this regard.[3]

Identity formation strategies[edit]

Another issue of interest in social psychology is related to the notion that there are certain identity formation strategies which a person may use to adapt to the social world. (Cote & Levin 2002, pp. 3–5) developed a typology which investigated the different manners of behavior that individuals may have. (3) Their typology includes:

Identity formation strategies[edit]

Another issue of interest in social psychology is related to the notion that there are certain identity formation strategies which a person may use to adapt to the social world. (Cote & Levin 2002, pp. 3–5) developed a typology which investigated the different manners of behavior that individuals may have. (3) Their typology includes:

Psychological symptomsPersonality symptomsSocial symptoms
RefuserDevelops cognitive blocks that prevent adoption of adult role-schemasEngages in childlike behaviorShows extensive dependency upon others and no meaningful engagement with the community of adults
DrifterPossesses greater psychological resources than the Refuser (i.e., intelligence, charisma)Is apathetic toward application of psychological resourcesHas no meaningful engagement with or commitment to adult communities
SearcherHas a sense of dissatisfaction due to high personal and social expectationsShows disdain for imperfections within the communityInteracts to some degree with role-models, but ultimately these relationships are abandoned
GuardianPossesses clear personal values and attitudes, but also a deep fear of changeSense of personal identity is almost exhausted by sense of social identityHas an extremely rigid sense of social identity and strong identification with adult communities
ResolverConsciously desires self-growthAccepts personal skills and competencies and uses them activelyIs responsive to communities that provide opportunity for self-growth

Anthropologists have most frequently employed the term 'identity' to refer to this idea of selfhood in a loosely Eriksonian way (Erikson 1972) properties based on the uniqueness and individuality which makes a person distinct from others. Identity became of more interest to anthropologists with the emergence of modern concerns with ethnicity and social movements in the 1970s. This was reinforced by an appreciation, following the trend in sociological thought

The first favours a primordialist approach which takes the sense of self and belonging to a collective group as a fixed thing, defined by objective criteria such as common ancestry and common biological characteristics. The second, rooted in social constructionist theory, takes the view that identity is formed by a predominantly political choice of certain characteristics. In so doing, it questions the idea that identity is a natural given, characterised by fixed, supposedly objective criteria. Both approaches need to be understood in their respective political and historical contexts, characterised by debate on issues of class, race and ethnicity. While they have been criticized, they continue to exert an influence on approaches to the conceptualisation of identity today

Hegel rejects Cartesian philosophy, supposing that we do not always doubt and that we do not always have consciousness. In his famous Master-Slave Dialectic Hegel attempts to show that the mind

(Geist) only become conscious when it encounters another mind. One Geist attempts to control the other, since up until that point it has only encountered tools for its use. A struggle for domination ensues, leading to Lordship and Bondage.

Nietzsche, who was influenced by Hegel in some ways but rejected him in others, called for a rejection of "Soul Atomism" in The Gay Science. Nietzsche supposed that the Soul was an interaction of forces, an ever-changing thing far from the immortal soul posited by both Descartes and the Christian tradition. His "Construction of the Soul" in many ways resembles modern social constructivism.

Martin Heidegger, following Nietzsche, did work on identity. For Heidegger, people only really form an identity after facing death. It's death that allows people to choose from the social constructed meanings in their world, and assemble a finite identity out of seemingly infinite meanings. For Heidegger, most people never escape the "they", a socially constructed identity of "how one ought to be" created mostly to try to escape death through ambiguity

this is an interesting aspect of identity and how we have many different disciplines to understand the self. I find nietzches idea of fighting back the idea of a soul and bringing into a scientific aspect. I also find heidggers idea of only choosing idenitys when facing death. I will use this in my piece by using death symbolism.

I also lke the idea of collective and socially constructed identity. I want to try and reach this idea in my work by having symoboylism of the collective- maybe a crowd or a communist symbol.

http://psychology.about.com/od/theoriesofpersonality/a/personalityelem.htm

According to Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality, personality is composed of three elements. These three elements of personality - known as the id, the ego and the superego - work together to create complex human behaviors.

  • According to Freud, the id is the source of all psychic energy, making it the primary component of personality.
The id is driven by the pleasure principle, which strives for immediate gratification of all desires, wants, and needs. If these needs are not satisfied immediately, the result is a state anxiety or tension.
However, immediately satisfying these needs is not always realistic or even possible. If we were ruled entirely by the pleasure principle, we might find ourselves grabbing things we want out of other people's hands to satisfy our own cravings
  • The ego is the component of personality that is responsible for dealing with reality.
  • According to Freud, the ego develops from the id and ensures that the impulses of the id can be expressed in a manner acceptable in the real world.
  • The ego functions in both the consciouspreconscious, and unconscious mind.
The ego operates based on the reality principle, which strives to satisfy the id's desires in realistic and socially appropriate ways. The reality principle weighs the costs and benefits of an action before deciding to act upon or abandon impulses.

  • he superego is the aspect of personality that holds all of our internalized moral standards and ideals that we acquire from both parents and society - our sense of right and wrong.
  • The superego provides guidelines for making judgments.
  • According to Freud, the superego begins to emerge at around age five.
There are two parts of the superego:
  1. The ego ideal includes the rules and standards for good behaviors. These behaviors include those which are approved of by parental and other authority figures. Obeying these rules leads to feelings of pride, value and accomplishment.
  2. The conscience includes information about things that are viewed as bad by parents and society. These behaviors are often forbidden and lead to bad consequences, punishments or feelings of guilt and remorse.
The superego acts to perfect and civilize our behavior.

i like the idea of seprating into 3s for the personalities. maybe for one of the characters in the line up having an illustration of the ego, id, superego to represent the ideas of identity. i feel like i could make symbolism to psychology in the photo.
id would be represented by an animal , the ego by chains , and the superego by a bible /law book

development of digital stills - collage and found imagery

i want to use collage and found imagery for my cardboard cut out idea. i need a collage that fits with the British sea side theme and also isn't to distracting for the message of the image.
Waldemar Strempler. I like the use of collage and it relates to my theme of disguise because 'she' is made up of different people.:

for example this one doesn't fit with the theme and is a bit to distracting.
I thought this was an interesting way to represent the connection between humans and nature. I liked the impression given by this abstract style.:
i like this image more as it feels like it fits more to the theme and the time period i want to mimic on the board. i like how the pictures don't exactly merge together but still have an overall emotion.

Hollie Chastain, Book Cover Collages, Contemporary collage on old book covers, The Hole Summer Reading exhibit:
i really like this picture as well. it has a found imagery feel and a simple style which would attach well to the cardboard cutout simplicity. i like the difference in colour. some beige but others bright colours. i will use that idea for my project.

The wonderfully weird collages of California based artist Eugenia Loli.:
i really like this style of old pictures. i will try and reconstruct this to match the beach theme for my photo.

this is the kinda style i want to reconstruct in my collage. i think it could be used to create a powerful image.
other examples

The wonderfully weird collages of California based artist Eugenia Loli.:
i will need to get a technician to help me create this style of image from a photo using photoshop

development of digital stills- double exposure

for double exposure i was going to use it for my part of me project but i discovered that the idea was a bit dull and overdone. i felt like there was more i could say in my other projects.

these images are really nice and meaningful but the style is a bit of a clique at the moment and i don't feel like i would be adding to it.
i like the idea of having this as a part of my chained photo. i think it could be used to show more of who i am as a person.

i like this photo as it has more meaning. and i also like as it is combined with the multiplicity idea. it give me inspiration to have this for one of my characters in my police stand up idea.
using the double exposure to represent that part of my personality.

http://snip.ly/S5Ah#http://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/tutorials/how-to-create-a-double-exposure-effect-in-photoshop

this is a tutorial for doing double exposure. it is good as it takes you though step by step and shows how to make both the images work together. it makes it look simple. i will show the finished project to the technicians to see that i've done it well.

the pictures are very pale and soft. i think it would be good practicing with stronger colours to see if it works.

development of digital stills- mirrors

i like the idea of using mirrors to show more than the initial message in the photo. i think mirrors can show more about a person and can be used to symbolized self reflection on your personality

http://www.ask.com/world-view/mirror-symbolize-spirituality-ba9e6f9bd9dcf48e
A spiritual mirror is said to reflect the life each person creates, including people, places, and events in the viewer's life. It has also been said to describe the act of continual self-evaluation regarding the consequences of thoughts and actions.
To benefit from the symbolism of a spiritual mirror in self-evaluation, let the symbolism of light illuminating a room illuminate the thoughts so the mirror can reflect the surroundings and the life created by the person looking. Know that, just like a real mirror, a spiritual mirror can only reflect what is currently truly there.

this picture shows how reflections can be used to give aesthetic beauty into a photography. it also shows how important the light is to reflections to bring a lot into the photograph
this picture shows how reflection can be used to show more than the actual picture, i still think this can be used to show a more emotional or meaningful reflection which shows more that this but this picture is a good example of reflection.

this shows how mirrors can show more that the initial image. it is very powerful using to to have the eyes star directly at the viewer looking into the soul. i like this idea a will use it in my chained photograph.
from this picture it gives me the idea to use colour in the reflection and using black and white in the general picture. this can be used to symbolized the reflection showing more.
this is a good example of a refection telling more than the initial photograph. this also give a emotional connection i like.
this image combines both multiplsity photographs and reflection which i like and will use in my photograph.
i like the shattered mirror as it give emotion to the reflection and a hidden look to the photo.
