development of digital stills- artist inspiration- charles latham

Charles Latham

Charles Latham
  • Created a series of photographs that showed him physically harming himself after the break up of a relationship
    • Alarmed his friends and caused debates when they were posted online
  • Latham wanted to continue investigating the issues and feelings he portrayed in the original photographs so created Cyrus
    • Cyrus’ is Latham’s imaginary friend, alter ego, personal demon and doppelganger
    • He was able to examine himself in a more controlled way
    • By adding this character Latham found a way to address aspects of his life that caused him pain or that he hadn’t come to terms with
    • Projects feelings of self-loathing on to Cyrus instead of himself
    • Creates a protective layer of acting and role-play within a safe environment so he does not hurt himself
  • Latham can be both model and photographer
  • Cyrus is Latham’s middle name that he is ashamed of and has kept secret
  • Secrecy and shame also arise in his feelings about his sexuality which he may also explore through Cyrus
  • Props such as mask and handcuffs along with the ambiguous nature of their relationship suggest something threatening and frightening

i find his work impirational as it makes staments on both the image of self and also self judgment and anxiety about one's self. i like that he has use multishots of himself and layered them in photoshop. i find the use of symbolism powerful as it adds more to the photo and reinforces the meanings present in the photo. you can also see the imprance of the mise en scene of the inter photo. ever aspect is important to charles and the meaning we get from the photo. ie white simbolisng innocence with the black being dirty. the unmade bed. the fake smart suit, the blood paiting. all of these have their own meanings.
