building the set

start to build

we had the set design all done we new what pannels needed adding to the already exsisting set now we needed to clean the walls and put up the set.

I brough in tools for stripping the walls including sandpaper ect. it worked fairly well but took to long, that when i asked if anyone had a steamer, luckly ivan did so he went and grabbed it, we used that mostly on the other side as that side needed to be smoother. we then put the walls up. i was very fussy to make sure they were straight using a ruler when needed.

when we got it all up it looked very good and we happly went home.

the next time we got there we started puting up linning paper which we all worked together on doing. it took a while to get it good so we started on the ID side as little creases werent such a issue on that side. I prefered to spend longer to not get the creases but group decision said we should speed up.
once we got all the linning paper up on both sides we could paint

we started on the ID side putting down a base layer of gray then stippling the brown and grey to create the rusted look, they also needed to get blended together. there were 3 roles, brown stippler, grey stippler and a blender, this created the effect of old rusted paint.

after lunch there was issue.
we had agreed on green paint on the other side. they had done purple. we were upset. we thought it was a attack on us. we got excutive producer, they get arngry for not telling them, everyone of in huff, we agree to be the bigger guys and change ours to dark purple. END

set build- art direction notebook

Art direction notebook

i decided i wanted to grab all the final ideas and put it in a collected notebook to keep the direction good as it was all related and didnt need stuff from devolpment and i could clearly show the final product idea.

(sorry for poor pictures- im going to show the book properly at assessment

this is the set ideas. is says about the divission. the colour scape for the id and ego with visual examples. the way props will be warped reflections of themselfs and the idea for costume. all are shown in more detal later.

this is the floor plan of the room. it shows the division of superego and id and the placment of the pannels mirror chairs and "windows". it also shows the dimentions of the pannels

this shows a 3d drawing of the set with basic colours. this shows the basics of the set and is spacing and scale. also shown is the wall paper falling away towards the mirror. it also shows the dimentions of the diffrent pannels and how they will look basically.

these are the paint charts. we were mostly lookning at the greens when we were approaching the build process but i looked through all of these till i was happy with the colour choices

These are the colour charts for both id and superego as you can see the super ego is plain with mutted colours, nothing stands out, it symbolises the safety and boringness of the nature of the superego and is fear of being out of the normal.
the id is more contrasted with strong vibrant colours agains dark grey scale symbolising is powerfull nature and darkness within.

this is the prop list (upside down) they are warped mirrored objects each coming in pares. firstly the mirror which is the ego so is basic plain wood to symbolise is simple controlling nature. the tattered grey curtains in the ID and the white blinds in the superego. the two chairs are there to inhance the performance but also give a level of space to the set. one will look brand new the other like its been left for years. there will be a lamp on each side one with shade one without. ALL THESE PROPS COME FROM RESEARCH INTO THE ELEMENTS OF THE ID AND SUPEREGO AND ARE THERE TO MATCH THE CHARATERS CREATED TO REPRESENT THEM.
the post it notes will represent organised and planed nature and the ink splots free flow mind. the simple plant with represent function and the weeds and vines chaos. for relationships there will be condoms to show sex as the top of the ID relationship and a weading ring to represnt the desire of the superego. the underwear represent ludness and vulgarity and the tie represents respecfulness. the beer bottles show pleasure over all and the water bottle restraint and health. the bible and porn magz repsent morality sources. the baby objects and mom and dad mugs represent where the ID and superego come from. the christmas list represents want and the life plan need. the ultiltarian scales and selphie stick represetn responsiblity and personal intresnt. the posters reprsent the idea of self.
dog collor animal and bishop collor human.

some of the objects i wanted to change for example the bishop collar was to whisy washy so ethan thought of a fine dinning set, same with the superman poster billie thought of a motivational poster.

other objects was the mirror sheet which is said shhould be under the table so the superego can drag it away to create a mess at the end of the film.

(start with id)
for the superego i want a baige dress, but i realised it didnt fit the mirroed element so i decided to do a smart white top with black trowers wearing a tie to show a more controlled verson of hte id.

these are the costume ideas for the ID i thought around child like, sexual, movement , and harley quin (weird mix i know) i thought of using long socks like school girls and a short wavey ripped skirt. then a open school like top with short sleaves with a red bra underneath, this woud match her sexualised red lips. i want black eyes through make up and contact lens.

i then made a google doc to get the props.

production design paint

Paint

for super ego side use pigeon green 1 shade lighter

for ID side need to create rusted effect with a strong green primary colour

Image result for neo green rusted paint

I will have to try out creating this effect with a strong primary colour or using a darker colour and then making my decision

this is a good video for creating the rusted effect look

http://justpaintitblog.com/2013/11/how-to-paint-faux-rust-2/

to give the paint more texture i could use sand

http://www.ehow.com/info_12014852_can-add-paint-make-textured-walls.html

you can also sand paper over the paint to help with the rusting

colours i been think of art lime green

or apple green

mossy green is also a possiblity

i have decided tommorow at lunch time i will go to homebase and look a colours for the paint

pro tools sound scape- editing

now i had all my sounds it was time to start editing

I did all my editing in protools as it is in my opinion the best for sound editing.
i started by creating my project and organisng all my clips into sections and naming the files i was using.

i decided the first thing i should do is create my back ground resonance track.

i placed the resonance tracks on seperate tracks. i had about 3 for the singing bowls and 1 bass harmonics sounds and 1 tunning fork track. i then listened through the tracks a selected the parts i thought were the best. i then created 3 singing bowl tracks 1 bass harmonic track and 1 tuning fork track.

i put all the singing bowl clips on 3 separate tracks. i of set each one so they merged together. i managed to level them against eachother so they worked together.

i made the tuning fork track one long droneing note by fading the tracks together into one track and cutting out the silent and broken parts of the clips.

i selected the parts of the bass harmonics i liked and put them in one long "melody" i did one verson with the pluck of the string and one without. i prefered the one without as it matched with the other resonances.

I then decided the best thing to do was to create the voice over track. that would give me the structure of the "story" to put the desriptive sounds to. i started by getting all my voice over recordings on a unused part of the workplace. i then worked from the script taking phrases ie. "you are a brilliant scientist" and then i would find the versions of that phrase in the recordings. cut them out. put them next to each other, and then decided which one sounded best. id then delete the others and put it on the voice over track. id did this slow process for the whole voice over.

i then started with the first descriptive sound which was the scientist sounds. the books and keyboard. for the book sounds i had to make sure it flowed. so i choose the parts which worked together and then layered them together so they sounded "thicker". i then used the keyboard as a rhythm for the books.

the next sound was the apple sound. i put first the cutting sound and then the biting sound i had to cut out the unpleasent eating sounds. this created a sequential sound describing the ripness of the apple.

then i had to work on the sea sounds. this was the most difficult bit and will go into more detail later.

i then put the door opening and filled it will chat which slowley increased in intensity through personlised fade ins.

for the Beatle chat i did several diffrent things to each chat i created. first for organisation i chose diffrent sections of the chat from diffrent mic locations this created a wider sound. i then for the first track made the volume increase over time. for the second i made the eq change over time so the highs go less. for the 3rd i made the track reverse using studio effects. i created one half normal the other reversed then create a fade between them.

for the heart beat and footsteps i had to level them pefectly against the voice so they are the but not distracting.

TO FULLY DESCRIBE MY EDIT I TOOK SOME SCREEN SHOTS WHEN I HAD FINISHED MY PROJECT

this is my tracks. i have about 8 more that can be seen. i have a mix of mono and stereo tracks.

this is a view of my whole mix down. it shows how the resonancse are a constant sound through out the piece created via placment and loops. then there is the voice over going through the piece with gaps to add power to the sounds and give space to other sounds.
also you can see the book sound section. the sea section. the electric buzz section. the door and voice section and the finally the voices and footstep and heartbeat section.

this is my resonance tracks. as you can see there is 3 singing bowl tracks which i took the sections i wanted and create 3 symbotic tracks. the red track is the bass harmonics. they differ from pitch but are smoothly put together via having no pluck sound and having cross fades. with the tunning fork i took out the bits i didnt need and created a long droned using fades and loops.
i also panned 1 singing bowl right and 1 left and one in the middle.

from this you can see the effect i put on the 2nd singing bowl track. i put a pitch shift so for cetain parts of the voice over "story" the pitch would go up or down to give a cetain feeling. i had to use cross fades so it wasnt too sudden.

this shows how i cut out the voice over a put it in cetain places to give emphasis to cetain parts and create an overall story.
i place them so it fitted with the backing track. i made sure the vocal track was the right level to fit with the rest of the track and not get lost. in cetain places i creativly liked the voice being overpowered slightly aswell.

for the book sounds i placed them in cetain places so the sound had more depth. i added a 1 band eq to take out the low rusle and bumps in the book sounds so i kept the high end sound of book flips i want. i made sure there was a slow fade out so it works with the other sounds at that part.

this shows how i connected the apple with the book part and the sea part.
this also shows the stucture of the sea part.

for the sea structure i did one running tap sound to create a constant background sound of water. then 2 wave tracks created in the bath put togther so they are in parral. also there is 1 track of stones (rice) put in the right timing to make the sea sound like its going over stones.
the last bit is a river sound to create the swell put in the right place.

the effects i put in was first a EQ in the wave tracks to lower the sound to try and remove the reverb created by recording in a bathroom. the i pitch shift them to sound more like the strenght of real waves. i then EQ the rice to make it sound more like stones by taking the high freqences out.
the waves are also panned to create a thickness of sound.

for the ships horn i added 4 effects. first i used studio effects to lenghten the sound with the pitch. i then added a reverb to make it sound far away. then i added a pitch shift to lower it to sound like a ships horn. i then added a slight eq to take of the very high frequencies.
it then need some more ummpth so i added a bass harmonic to stenghten the sound.

this is for the electircal buzz. i used 4 diffrent sounds layered over eachother and leveled so diffrent sounds come through. i then used volume ossilation on 1 of the clips.

for the door part i used 2 seperate door opening and shutting sounds. layered it sounded my powerfull. i had to level the shut well as it needed to be loud as it cut of the other sounds but not so loud as it ruin the mix.

this shows clearly the effects i put on the beatle talking section. the first track i automated the 1 band eq
second track i layer and added a reverse
3rd 1 i added a reverb automated

this shows how i created the heart beat and walking using a eq on the heartbeat and a reverb on the walking leaving a trail as the piece ends.

this shows a small section of the clips i used.

I had to work hard to level the clips to work together. i also used panning to create widder sounds on bits which had layered sounds.

set design idea

the basic set is a rectangle. this works with the other teams set. however for ours we will build 5 inner walls to create mirrored corridors with half a hexagon on the end.

the main props will be a mirror connecting the mirrored corridors which will be basically a hole between them.

the other prop will be a wooden chair just in front of the mirror.

the object in each side will reflect each other. the superego will be controlled and passionless whereas the id will be passionate but dark.

i will be working on these metaphorical parallels

one idea i have is a plant pot with flower in the superego and a tangly vines and moss on the id side

one side will be very messy the other ordered

I've debated having the mattress but i think it would only work on the id side so decided not to include it.

another idea would be post its in the superego and ink splits on the other

set design developments

from talking with our group and the production designer of the other set we have decided on a rectangular room. within our group we had a discussion about the actual divide in the set

on one side was our director and assistant director and other side me and the camera team. the issue was we wanted a wall to divide the ID and superego to represent the ego and create an seperation and a more variared amount of shots for the camera team. it creates a more intrapped space which it think represents ones own mind more.

we ended up going with the wall in the middle but im glad we had the discussion.

this was my intial drawing of the other teams set so i could incoprate it into my own

this was my drawing for the intial set. we took a while working with the camera team and director to find this shape. issue we were having was the other group using the door and they also wanted 4 walls at the back.
you can see the seperation of the rooms and intial ideas of changing pannels

this was our working plan. we where going to move the back pannels back 1 and replace that window with the window and bring in the door. this became to complicated and would of caused issue with the wallpapering.

at this point we had talked about the paint colour for the shared side. the colour which was decided was pigeon green, this is a very pale colour of green which we would contrast with dark green rust effect on the other ID side. the set for size and easiness wise was strunck to 3 pannels each side. we also decided to keep the window which would be a blind on the shared side and tattered curtains on the other side.

we then need to think about the colour scapes. to match the other side.

before the set build on thursday we needed to buy linning paper, i need to finish prop list, i needed to do my 3d set design, and sort paint colour .

i messure the pannels and we worked out how many roles we needed
